When a planet is in retrograde, it appears to move backwards in the sky from Earth's perspective. Retrograde planets aren't actually reversing—it's an optical illusion caused by orbital mechanics. In astrology, retrograde periods emphasise review, revision, and reflection in that planet's themes.

Retrograde duration varies by planet. Mercury retrograde lasts about 3 weeks and happens 3-4 times per year. Venus retrograde lasts about 40 days every 18 months. Mars retrograde lasts 2-3 months every 2 years. Outer planets (Jupiter through Pluto) retrograde for 4-5 months annually.

A stationing planet is slowing to a near-stop before changing direction. 'Stationing retrograde' means the planet is about to turn retrograde. 'Stationing direct' means the planet is about to resume forward motion. Station periods are considered especially potent in astrology.
